we're home

. . . and exhausted. Apart from the normal tiredness after a weekend away, the weather has been unbelievably humid and still hot (in between storms and rain, that is). Today is actually cool, and a very welcome relief. The bushfires around Victoria are under control, thank goodness.

We all loved Narnia (knew we would LOL). I managed to finish reading it on Friday morning before we left, and even though Kate said it ruined the film for her a bit, I think it was good that the younger ones knew what was coming, particularly with the death of Aslan and the battle scenes - that was pretty scary stuff. Caleb sat transfixed throughout, I wished I could have taken a photo of the rapturous expression on his face; Noah hid under the seat a couple of times, and Ray had to fish him out; Isaiah sat on my lap for most of the second half of the movie; and Grace cried along with me through most of it. The movie was very well done, I was particularly struck by the intensely beautiful cinematography, the early parts against the snow were so beautiful. The children did a wonderful job - little Lucy was so sweet and perfectly Lucy. I was a little apprehensive about the handling of this long-time favourite of mine, but overall it was good. The influence of The Lord of the Rings was pretty obvious to me, such a high benchmark to meet, in the same way as the original Starwars movies raised the bar for sci-fi in the 80s. I felt there were a few shortcomings in the creating of the creatures, and the white witch was neither haughty enough, nor coldly evil enough - she was a little too human in comparison to my readings of the book. But my kids are keen for me to read more of the books to them, so that is great!

After we left the cinema (and when we walked out into the heat we wished we could go back inside and see another movie in air-conditioned comfort), we headed off to see some long-time friends near Dad. We got caught along the way in a ferocious storm - it forced every single west-bound vehicle off the road and onto the verge - not one single car passed us for the duration of the storm. The rain was so heavy, and the wind was driving the rain so hard, it was coming in the tops of the doors! It took us an extra half-hour to make the trip, but we had a lovely evening with the Graces, and saw some of the photos from their big WA adventure of last year. The two youngest (Isaiah and Milly were born 4 weeks apart), who were only babies last time we were visiting, were an absolute riot together, and raced about without a rest until we left at 10.30!

Saturday morning we went shopping for clothes for some of the kids - Target had 30% off all remaining summer clothing (already at reduced prices), so we got some t-shirts and shorts for the boys at ridiculously cheap prices - bought some for next summer too!

Everyone came to Dad's for the afternoon, and the kids decided they needed to go for a swim, even though it was raining lightly - the water was pretty good, and it was humid and warm despite the rain. I got some photos of them "swimming in the rain" (can't stop the tune going round in my head - I'm swimming in the rain, just swimming in the rain, what a glorious feeling, I'm splashing again . . .). Melissa and Matt arrived and shared baby Jessica around for cuddles, she was very awake and alert for most of the afternoon, so I hope she wasn't too tired on Sunday! Uncle Denis and Aunty Robyn came, and my two Aunts who are Dad's sisters came too, which was wonderful - we only catch up once a year at the Australia Day reunion, I'm afraid. Aunty Glenys brought a heap of photos from their latest Disneyland visit (they went for New Year's Eve, can you believe it!), and we heard all about it - if I can't get there myself, I will visit through their eyes LOL. We had dinner in two sittings - kids first, then adults, there are just so many of us now. It was near impossible to get a photo of the kids all around the table (two tables, actually LOL), and I just realised that cousin Matt is missing from the photo, oh well, you get the idea (big Matt is standing holding Jessica, so she is in the photo, her first family-all-together meal!)

We headed home late on Sunday morning, as it was starting to get hot and steamy again. We had to stop in Morwell for a couple of things, change over a radiator fan at Traralgon (there were pieces missing and no instructions - Ray's good at tinkering, but not that good!), so we were all thoroughly hot and tired and cranky by the time we got home. We had a new calf in the paddock (one of the hereford cows had calved), and a little dog who was very glad to see us home - he sulks in the dog-run whenever we go away.

Put dirty washing in the machine, put stuff away, threw hamburgers together for dinner, and got the kids to bed as early as we could - the house was still unbearably hot and sticky to sleep until quite late. Kate has developed a case of conjunctivitus in one eye, and was just hysterically tired (we are heading into town this morning to get something to clear that up). And while Ray watched the tennis and cricket (channel hopping) I scrapped some photos of Jessica.

I did another page, but can't post it for a few days (CT stuff, not released yet). I emailed it to Liss though, and she liked it!
