a birthday
Caleb is 8! it's so not fair! they grow up so fast!

please ignore the craft stuff on the shelf behind him, I hate when I get that kinda junk in the photo (sigh)
He had a pretty good day. His Grandpa couldn't come visit (he usually tries to make it down for each birthday), so after spending most of the morning playing his new Shrek computer game (thanks Aunty Liss!), we took a picnic lunch to Tarra Valley park, and did the short walk to the falls (not that there was much water falling). There is nothing like the rainforest! It smells divine, so cool and quiet, and the sound of the water trickling over the rocky river bed is totally relaxing.
I just had to get this photo of the kids at the entrance to the park

. . . so that I could compare it with this one that I found in Grandpa's slides, taken in the late 50s (at a guess).

Although the overhead board is new, the dividing post just has to be the same, and I am guessing that the rock columns had already been there for some time when Grandpa took this photo (I'm not sure who these people are, I'll have to ask Dad, or his sisters).
Caleb requested home-made pizzas for dinner (I make the dough in the bread machine, so it isn't that bad), and Ray ran into town for some hot chips for the side. Then we sang happy birthday with his chocolate ripple cake (non-Australians, really, don't ask, you don't want to know - totally evil!)

We have two more newborn calves today, both bulls; the count this year is 1 heifer and 4 bulls (a few more heifers would be nice, but steers earn money sooner). There are a couple more to calve in the next few weeks, and then a break until late autumn (hopefully).
The kids start back to schooling tomorrow, I feel completely unprepared! I'm looking forward to getting back into the routine of schooling, with a bit of scheduling too. Kate probably won't be able to do much, as she now has conjunctivitis in both eyes - a trip to the doctor on Thursday if it isn't clearing by tomorrow night.

Happy Birthday Caleb!! It looks like you had a good day.
I hope Kate's eyes are better tomorrow - there's nothing like waking up with your eyelids glued down with gunk....ick!!
I saw your January layout at the digichick - what a cool layout! I might have to scraplift that one!!
Deb,
A belated happy birthday to Caleb. What a fantastic old photo and looks in great nick.
Love the chocolate cake. Have done it for a few birthdays as no eggs. Have even made it into the birthday number.
